American Le Mans Series – March - October (ALMS)
The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) is the premier sports car racing series in the world today. Founded in 1999 with a direct link to the internationally renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans, the ALMS has four major classes of competition: LMP1, LMP2, GT1 and GT2. The LMP, or Le Mans Prototype, classes are for specially-designed prototype race cars with little resemblance to street cars. The GT1 class is for cars designed to mimic street cars but with little or no parts sharing between the race and production versions. The largest and most popular class, GT2, is for modified street machines. A subdivision of the GT2 class is the GT2S class for high performance sedans. Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing utilizes a production-based Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in the GT2 class. All classes, with the exception of GT2S, are eligible for competition at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
With the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans as cornerstone events, the ALMS competes on ten world-class road courses in North America’s premier markets. All events enjoy live television coverage on The SPEED Channel or CBS Sports in the United States and MotorsTV in Europe. Additional international exposure comes over multiple other networks and on the American Le Mans Radio Web.
24 Hours of Le Mans – June 4 (Test Day), June 17-18 (74th Running)
The oldest sports car event in the world, the 24 Hours of Le Mans (locally known as the 24 Heures du Mans) is the father of all modern sports car racing. Run each year on the famous Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, the event draws hundreds of thousands to the track with millions viewing the internationally telecast race at home. Each year only the best sports car racing teams from around the world are invited to enter the event. Automatic invitations are awarded to the winner of each class from the previous year’s event, the Champion of each class in the American Le Mans Series and the Le Mans Endurance Series and the winner of the Petit Le Mans. Additional invitations go to top-finishers in each Series as well as major manufacturer programs around the world. In 2006, Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing received an invitation for winning the GT2 class of the 2005 Petit Le Mans, the GT2 class ALMS Championship and for finishing second in the 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans. Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing has attended the event three times winning in its first two attempts (2003 and 2004) and finishing second in the third (2005).
